Who We Are

The Lesotho Bureau of Statistics (BOS) is the government department of the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning responsible for collecting, processing, analysing and disseminating official statistics in Lesotho.

BOS presently is structures as follows: Agriculture & Food security Statistics, Environmental & Energy Statistics, Population Statistics, Socio Economic Statistics, National Accounts & Enterprise statistics, Foreign trade & Price statistics, Survey Methodology and Cartography, Field Organization, Information and Communications Technology.

To be a trusted national statistical system in the production and dissemination of official statistics by responding to diverse user demands, with strong partnerships among stakeholders.

Mission

To coordinate among the national statistical system, and with users, in an effective and efficient manner that ensures the integration of the national data ecosystems and the inclusion of a gender perspective in the production and dissemination of official statistics to drive the development agenda.

Functions of BOS

  • Conduct population and housing censuses, agricultural and economic censuses, household and economic surveys.
  • Compile national statistical indicators.
  • Manage official statistical databases.
  • Disseminate statistical information to users.
  • Coordinate the National Statistical System by: Developing national statistical standards, Coordinating statistics produced by government ministries and agencies,
    Avoiding duplication of data collection, Establishing common concepts, definitions and classifications and Developing and implementing a national statistical development strategy (NSDS).
