In 2024, Lesotho's economy remained heavily reliant on international trade, with imports totalling M33,970 million, primarily comprising food and beverages, fuel and clothes and footwear. Major import partners included South Africa, China, and India.
Exports were valued at around M18,170 million, dominated by clothing and footwear, diamonds and bulk water, with key markets being the United States of America, Belgium, and South Africa.
South Africa is the main player for both Exports and Imports for Lesotho.

Clothing and Footwear contributed the highest share of exports (35.3 percent) followed by Diamonds with 23.8 percent, Bulk water with 18.7% and Fabrics with 7.8%.

The exports value of major trading partners in 2024 constituted 99.3 percent of the total exports value (M18,170 million), with the highest share of percentage value of exports (58.0 percent) destined to South Africa mainly Bulk water and wool and mohair, followed by Belgium (Diamonds) and the USA(Apparel) with 23.8 percent and 14.7 percent respectively.

Main origin of Imports
The majority of Lesotho’s top trading partners were Asian countries, though they contributed less value compared to South Africa. Out of the total value (M33,970.40 million) of Lesotho’s imported commodities in 2024; 96.5 percent (M32,779.63 million) was contributed by ten major trade partners, with the highest share of the commodities value (78.6 percent) imported from South Africa followed by China (10.4 percent) as the second largest trade partner. The United States of America and African countries contributed less than 1.0 percent each.
